Our Story

Silpini, our name, is Sanskrit for female artist. We are a society/group of women artisans, passionate about protecting the dying art technique of Calico printing of Jammu region ( in the state of Jammu and Kashmir). We are proud to announce our efforts in reviving this time honoured craft. The traditional art of Calico printing originated in the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir. This dates back more than a century to the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. It enjoyed great popularity then but unfortunately it could not be sustained and protected. With the effort of many it has now been classified as a languishing art and there are a lot of government initiatives to revive and preserve it. It's a mammoth task and a large scale involvement is needed. That is where Silpini steps in, determined to rekindle the spark of this artistic heritage.

We are excited to be on this journey and are swelling with pride after empowering groups of women from rural Jammu with this artistic skill, thereby paving the way for a brighter tomorrow. The journey is ongoing.

This art, deeply rooted in the soul of Jammu is being nurtured back to life through skill training and support of local women by us. The trained artisans are now producing incredible pieces of art in the form of home decor items and apparel. We now stock exquisite dupattas, scarves, bedcovers, dining sheets, table mats, napkins, cushion covers, dress materials and many more things. This initiative is fueled by the passion and dedication of Minna Dubey. Alongside her is an expert in Calico Printing, the trainer- Mr. Tarsem Kumar Randhawa.
